About

Music

I was born into a musical family outside of Los Angeles in Southern California. By the time I was 12, I was playing piano, clarinet and vibraphone in various school ensembles and performing at music festivals in California and Nevada. Around this time, I became serious about pursuing jazz vibraphone and consequently spent my high school years playing and teaching jazz around Los Angeles and the Bay Area, while studying privately with the great vibraphonist Nick Mancini. I am currently studying jazz performance and constitutional law at the University of Miami, FL, where I study privately with Errol Rachipav, Martin Bejerano and Shelly Berg. I’ve had the pleasure of performing with esteemed musicians such as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Clay Jenkins, John Daversa, Bobby Watson, Joe Gilman, Cyrille Aimée, Chuck Bergeron, John Hart, Ndugu Chancler, Patrice Rushen, Matt Penman and others. I recently recorded a duo record with guitarist Jordan Rattner. The name of the record, and our duo, is still undecided.

Politics & Writing

I’ve always surrounded myself with books, from the time I was a little kid to when I moved into my first house in Miami. The daughter of politically active parents, I’ve been drawn to and involved with politics for a long time, and spent a portion of my senior year volunteering for Julia Brownley’s 2014 congressional campaign. Since entering college, I have written a monthly column for The Miami Hurricane called Here’s That Rainy Day that was recently awarded a 2017 Columbia Press Award. I write about culture, the courts, happenings in the US government and some of the things I’ve learned in my 20 short years of life. In 2013, I began interviewing jazz musicians and posting the transcripts on my blog, The Question Mark.

Art

I’ve long had an affinity for visual art. At the age of five I began taking lessons in an art studio, where I learned to draw, color with pastels, paint with watercolors and oil paints. Between 2010 and 2015, I worked in special education classrooms and volunteered for the Conejo Recreation District teaching art to children and adults with special needs. I recently discovered that many of my friends in the Frost School are exceedingly talented visual artists, as well as musicians. I created the website Frost Draws this past year to showcase artwork made by Frost School of Music students. You can find some of my artwork there, or in the “Art” section of this website.
